"Travel Training: Getting Around Independently"

Serving: Mortlake · Croydon Park · Inner West Sydney

Being able to get around on your own is one of the biggest steps toward independence. When you can catch a bus to see friends with growing confidence on public transport, take the train to work, or walk to the local shops, you're no longer waiting on someone else to make your plans happen. Travel opens up your whole world.

For many people, getting around feels daunting at first. Timetables, busy platforms, unfamiliar routes, and the worry of getting lost can all add up. That's exactly what travel training is for. It's friendly, practical support that helps you build confidence to travel safely and independently, at your own pace, as part of capacity building and independence.

What travel training looks like

Travel training is about learning a route until it feels second nature. We start with a journey that matters to you, like getting to TAFE, a workplace, a friend's house, or the shops in Mortlake or Croydon Park.

Then we break it down into manageable steps:

  • Planning the trip and checking the timetable
  • Knowing which stop, platform, or station you need
  • Tapping on with an Opal card
  • Recognising landmarks along the way
  • Knowing what to do if something changes, like a cancelled service

Each step is practised together until it feels comfortable, so nothing comes as a surprise on the day.

Fading the support, growing the confidence

The lovely thing about travel training is that it's designed to fade. The goal is that you need less help over time because you've genuinely learned the route.

A typical journey might go like this. First, we travel the whole route together, side by side. Next, we sit a few seats back so you're doing it more on your own. After that, we might meet you at the other end rather than travelling the whole way. Eventually, you're travelling solo and barely thinking about it.

That gradual handover is the whole point. It builds real, lasting confidence rather than just getting you there once.

Safety every step of the way

Feeling safe is essential to feeling independent, so safety runs through everything we practise. We work on things like crossing roads safely, staying aware of your surroundings, keeping your belongings secure, knowing the ins and outs of getting around Western Sydney, and knowing who to ask for help if you need it.

We also make a plan for the "what ifs." What if the bus is late? What if you miss your stop? Having a simple plan for these moments takes away a lot of the worry.

Working alongside allied health

Travel training often works best as part of a team. An occupational therapist might assess what skills to focus on and suggest strategies that suit how you learn. A physiotherapist might help with mobility and stamina for walking to and from stops. A psychologist might support you with managing anxiety in busy or crowded places.

Our role is to take those recommendations into the real world, practising them with you on actual journeys. When the whole team is using the same approach, progress comes faster and feels far less confusing. We're always happy to follow up after a therapy session and share what we're noticing so the plan can adjust as you grow.

Real journeys, real wins

We've supported plenty of people across the Inner West who started out nervous and ended up travelling with ease. One person wanted to get to their course independently. We rode the bus together, then sat further back, then waited at the destination. Now they travel solo and don't give it a second thought.

Another wanted to visit a friend across Mortlake without relying on family for lifts. A few weeks of practice later, they were making the trip whenever they liked. These wins are about so much more than transport. They're about freedom and feeling capable.

Going at your own pace

Some people pick up a route quickly. Others need more time and repetition, and that's completely fine. Progress isn't a straight line for anyone. We celebrate every small win, adjust when something isn't working, and never push faster than feels right for you.

Confidence grows when you feel safe and supported, and that belief is something we bring to every trip.
