Step by step

How the NDIS works

From first enquiry to using your supports — here's the journey in four plain-English steps.

  1. Step 1

    Apply & check eligibility

First, you check whether you meet the NDIS access requirements — generally relating to age, residency and disability — and submit an access request.

  2. Step 2

    Planning meeting

You meet with an NDIS planner or local area coordinator to talk through your daily life, your goals, and the supports that would help you.

  3. Step 3

    Get your plan

Your individual plan is created. It sets out your goals and the funded supports approved to help you work towards them.

  4. Step 4

    Use your supports

You choose providers and start using your funded supports — and your plan is reviewed over time as your needs and goals change.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to eligible people with disability so they can access the supports and services they need. Rather than a fixed list of services, it's designed to be flexible and personal.

It's person-centred and goal-based — your plan is built around what matters to you and the things you want to achieve, with funded supports to help you get there and live with greater independence.

  • Funding tailored to your individual goals
  • Choice and control over the supports you use

Frequently asked questions

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government scheme that provides funding to eligible people with disability so they can access the supports and services they need to live their lives and pursue their goals.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility generally depends on factors such as your age, your residency status, and having a permanent and significant disability that affects your everyday life. The official access requirements are set by the NDIS — it's always worth checking your individual situation.

What can funding be used for?

Funding is intended for reasonable and necessary supports that relate to your disability and help you work towards the goals in your plan. This can include support with daily living, building skills and independence, and taking part in your community.

Is my plan based on my goals?

Yes. The NDIS is person-centred and goal-based. Your plan is shaped around what matters to you — the things you want to achieve and the life you want to live — rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

How do I start?

A good first step is to learn about the eligibility criteria and make an access request to the NDIS. If you'd like a hand understanding the process, our team is happy to have a warm, no-pressure chat and point you in the right direction.
