"Hobbies & Interests: Support to Pursue What You Love"

Serving: St Marys · Epping · Five Dock · Western Sydney

The things you love matter

A hobby is never "just" a hobby. The garden you tend, the songs you play, the recipes you cook, the matches you follow — these are the things that make a week feel like yours. They give you something to look forward to, something to be good at, and something to talk about with others.

For a person with disability, keeping those interests alive can sometimes take a little extra support. Maybe it is getting to a class, finding the right group, or simply having the company to make it easier. That is where community participation support comes in — not to take over, but to help you keep doing what you love.

Rediscovering an old favourite

Life gets busy, and sometimes the hobbies we loved quietly slip away. The good news is that they are usually still there, waiting to be picked back up.

Think back. Was there something you used to enjoy and somehow stopped doing? It might be:

  • Gardening — even a few pots on a balcony or a patch in a community garden can bring real joy
  • Cooking or baking — making something from scratch and sharing it with others
  • Music — playing an instrument, singing along, or simply listening to favourites
  • Art and craft — painting, drawing, knitting, woodwork, whatever sparks something
  • Following sport — getting to a local game or watching with friends, or even joining in through sport and recreation

A support worker can help you take those first steps back, whether that means digging out the old paints or finding a friendly group nearby in Epping or Five Dock.

Trying something brand new

It is never too late to discover an interest. Some of the happiest people are the ones still picking up new things later in life. If you have always wondered about something, this is permission to give it a go.

Across Western Sydney and the inner-west, there are welcoming places to try almost anything:

  • Community art classes and craft groups
  • Cooking workshops and shared kitchens
  • Gentle exercise, swimming and movement classes
  • Gardening clubs and local green spaces around St Marys
  • Music groups, choirs and listening circles

You do not need any experience. You just need a little curiosity — and, if you would like one, a friendly hand to go along the first few times until you feel settled.

How support makes it easier

Pursuing a hobby can involve a surprising number of small hurdles: getting there, knowing what to bring, walking into a new room, settling in. A support worker quietly smooths all of that out.

This is companionship, not supervision. Your support worker is there to make the hobby possible and enjoyable — helping with transport, going along, lending a hand when you want one — never to take the reins. You stay firmly in charge of what you do and how you do it.

Over time, as you grow more comfortable, the support naturally eases back. Many people start out needing company to get to a class and end up going happily on their own, having made friends along the way.

Hobbies build more than skill

Here is the lovely thing about pursuing what you love: the benefits spread far beyond the hobby itself.

  • Connection — shared interests are one of the easiest ways to meet people
  • Confidence — getting better at something builds real self-belief
  • Routine — a regular class or session gives the week a comforting shape
  • Wellbeing — doing what you enjoy is genuinely good for how you feel

A weekly art class in Five Dock or a Saturday at a community garden near St Marys is rarely just about the art or the garden. It is about belonging, purpose and joy.

Let's bring your interests back to life

Whatever you love — or have always wanted to try — we would be glad to help you pursue it. There is no pressure and no judgement, just a warm conversation about what brings you joy and how the right support could help you do more of it.
