Sometimes the hardest part is deciding where to go
You want to get out and do something. The will is there. But staring at a blank weekend, it can be surprisingly hard to pick a destination. That is completely normal, and it is one of the most common things people tell us.
So we have pulled together a list of real, doable community outings across Inner West Sydney. None of them require a big budget or a big commitment. They are simply gentle ideas to get you out the door, into the fresh air and around other people. Pick one, try it, and see how it feels.
Outings that cost little or nothing
The best days out are not always the expensive ones. Some of the most enjoyable outings are simple, slow and free.
- A riverside walk near Mortlake — the paths along the water are flat, calm and lovely in the morning. Bring a thermos, find a bench, and watch the boats go by.
- A wander through Five Dock — Great North Road is full of friendly cafés, bakeries and shops. A slow stroll and a coffee can fill an hour beautifully.
- A visit to the local library — warm, quiet and welcoming. Many inner-west libraries run free talks, reading groups and craft sessions.
- A trip to a local park in Croydon Park — green space, room to breathe, and a perfect spot for a picnic or a gentle kick of a ball.
Outings that connect you with other people
If you are after a bit more social contact, these ideas put you among others without any pressure to perform.
- Local markets — browsing a market is a low-key way to be around people, chat with stallholders and pick up something nice.
- A community centre session — many centres across Inner West Sydney run social mornings, art groups and shared meals that welcome newcomers.
- A café you visit regularly — there is real comfort in becoming a "regular" somewhere. Pick a spot in Five Dock or Croydon Park and make it yours.
- A class or workshop — cooking, painting, gardening or gentle movement. Learning alongside others is one of the easiest ways to make friends and build connections.
Outings for the person who likes to keep busy
Some people light up when there is a bit of activity involved. If that sounds like you, try these.
- A morning at the shops with a list and a coffee to finish
- A trip to a garden centre or nursery to pick out something to grow
- A walk to a local landmark or lookout you have always meant to visit
- Helping out at a community garden or local event
Outings that follow your interests
The very best outings are the ones built around something you already love. Think about what lights you up, then go looking for it locally.
- Love music? Look for free community concerts, a local choir, or an open-mic afternoon.
- Love being outdoors? Map out a few different walks around Mortlake and the river, and tick them off one by one.
- Love a good chat? A regular catch-up at the same café or group can become the highlight of your week.
- Love making things? Craft groups and art classes across the inner-west are friendly places to start.
How a support worker can help
If getting out alone feels like a lot, you do not have to do it on your own. Our community participation support can be the friendly company that makes an outing easy and enjoyable — helping you get there, settle in and have a good time. For many people, this also starts with building confidence on public transport so they can reach the places they want to go.
This is about companionship, not supervision. You choose the outing. You set the pace. Your support worker is simply alongside you, sharing the day and making it possible. Over time, as the unfamiliar becomes familiar, many people find they need that hand a little less.
Start small, and let it grow
You do not need to plan the perfect day. Pick one idea from this list, give it a go, and notice how it feels afterwards. Most people find that one good outing makes the next one easier — and before long, getting out becomes a natural part of the week.
If you would like a friendly hand to explore what is out there across the inner-west and Sydney's west, we would love to help. Browse more ideas for getting out and about, or reach out any time through our contact us page. Your next great day out might be closer than you think.
