Picking a provider is one of the most personal choices you'll make with your NDIS plan. These are the people who'll come into your home, support your routine, and work alongside you toward your goals — so it's worth taking your time and asking good questions.
The good news is that a respectful provider will welcome your questions. If anyone makes you feel like you're asking too much, that's useful information in itself. Here's a friendly checklist to guide your conversations, wherever you are across Five Dock, Epping and the Inner West.
Questions about how they work
Start by understanding how the provider actually operates day to day:
- How do you match support workers to the people you support?
- Can I meet a worker before we start, and request a change if it's not the right fit?
- How do you handle a cancellation or a worker calling in sick?
- Do you support people locally, in suburbs like Five Dock and Epping?
- How flexible are you around my routine and changing needs?
You're looking for answers that feel honest and specific, not vague reassurances.
Questions about your support
Next, get into the detail of what your support will actually look like:
- Who will I usually work with, and how consistent will that be?
- How do you build support around my goals, not just tasks?
- Can support change over time as my needs change?
- How do you keep me involved in decisions about my own support?
Consistency matters a lot to most people. Knowing roughly who's coming, and when, makes a real difference to comfort and trust.
Questions about communication
How a provider communicates tells you a great deal about what working with them will feel like:
- Who do I contact if I have a question or a concern?
- How quickly do you usually respond?
- How will you keep me and my family updated?
- What happens if I'm not happy with something?
A provider who explains things clearly now will likely keep explaining things clearly later.
Questions about money and your plan
It's completely reasonable to talk openly about costs:
- How do your charges line up with the NDIS price guide?
- Will I get clear invoices I can understand?
- Are there any extra fees I should know about?
- Can you work with my plan management type — self-managed, plan-managed or NDIA-managed?
A trustworthy provider is transparent about money and never pressures you. If you're still weighing up your plan-managed and self-managed plans, it's worth knowing how each one shapes the providers you can choose.
Questions about quality and safety
You have every right to ask how a provider keeps people safe and supported well:
- How do you train and support your workers?
- What checks do your workers go through before they start?
- How do you handle feedback and complaints?
- How do you make sure I'm treated with respect and dignity?
These questions aren't rude — they're exactly the questions a good provider expects.
Trust your gut
Beyond the practical answers, pay attention to how the conversation feels. Ask yourself:
- Did they listen, or did they talk over me?
- Did they explain things in plain language?
- Did I feel respected and comfortable?
- Did it feel like a partnership, or a sales pitch?
A good provider should feel like someone you can build a relationship with. If something feels off, it's okay to keep looking until it feels right.
Take your time
There's no rush to sign with the first provider you speak to. You can talk to several, compare how they make you feel, and change your mind. This is your plan and your life — the choice belongs to you.
