Once an NDIS plan is approved, there's an important question to settle: who looks after the money? This is called *plan management*, and it decides how your funding is held and how providers get paid.
There are three options, and there's no single "right" answer — it depends on how much admin you're happy to take on and how much flexibility you want. Whether you're in Five Dock, Epping, or anywhere across the inner-west of Sydney, here's a friendly comparison to help you decide.
The three options at a glance
The three ways to manage an NDIS plan are:
1. Self-managed — you manage the funding directly 2. Plan-managed — a plan manager handles the bookkeeping 3. Agency-managed (NDIA-managed) — the NDIA pays providers for you
You can sometimes use a mix across different parts of your plan, too. Let's look at each one.
Self-managed
With self-management, you (or the participant) are in the driver's seat. You pay providers, keep receipts, and claim funds back from the NDIS.
The upside:
- The most choice and flexibility of any option
- You can use providers who aren't part of the NDIS, including using an unregistered NDIS provider like us
- Full control over who supports you and how
The trade-off:
- More admin — paying invoices, keeping records, and making claims
- You'll need to stay organised and on top of your budget
Self-management suits people who like being hands-on and want maximum flexibility. For a confident family in Five Dock juggling several supports, it can be very empowering — as long as the paperwork doesn't feel like a burden.
Plan-managed
With plan management, a plan manager handles the financial side for you. They pay your invoices, track your budget, and keep the records — while you still choose your own providers.
The upside:
- Plenty of choice — you pick your own providers
- Far less paperwork than self-managing
- Regular budget statements so you always know where you stand
The trade-off:
- You work with a third party, the plan manager
- Funding for plan management itself is usually included in the plan as a separate amount
Plan management is a popular middle ground. You get most of the flexibility of self-managing without the bookkeeping. It's often a great fit for people who want choice but would rather not chase invoices. Either way, it helps to stay on top of your NDIS plan budget so your funding lasts the whole plan.
Agency-managed (NDIA-managed)
With agency management, the NDIA pays providers directly. There's very little for you to do on the money side.
The upside:
- The least admin of all — almost nothing to handle yourself
- Simple and hands-off
The trade-off:
- You can only use NDIS-registered providers under this option
- Less flexibility in who you can choose
Agency management suits people who'd prefer a simple, hands-off arrangement and are happy choosing from registered providers.
How to choose what's right for you
Ask yourself a few questions:
- How much admin am I comfortable with? More control often means more paperwork.
- How much flexibility do I want? Self-managing offers the widest choice of providers.
- Do I want budget tracking done for me? A plan manager handles that.
- Do I have the time and confidence to manage claims? Be honest about your capacity.
There's no wrong answer — only what fits your life. A person in Epping who values simplicity might lean towards agency or plan management, while someone who loves being hands-on might self-manage.
You can change your mind
Here's a reassuring point: your management type isn't set in stone. You can ask to change it at your next plan review if your circumstances or preferences shift. Many people start one way and adjust as they get more comfortable — and the same goes if you decide to look at switching providers smoothly.
