Serving: St Marys · Western Sydney · Inner West
If you've spent time in aged care, hospitality or any people-facing role, you already carry more of what disability support needs than you might think. Many of the most caring support workers we meet across St Marys, the wider Western Sydney area and the Inner West didn't start in disability at all. They came from aged-care facilities, home care, retail, kitchens and front desks, then discovered that NDIS work let them slow down and really know the people they support.
At Adom Grace Care we're an unregistered NDIS provider, and we're actively recruiting caring women to join our team. If you're weighing up a move, here's an honest look at what transfers, what changes, and why so many people don't look back.
What you already bring with you
The heart of good support is the same wherever you've worked it: patience, warmth, reading a room, and noticing when someone isn't quite themselves. If you've worked in aged care, you've almost certainly built skills that map straight across:
- Personal care done with dignity, from showering and dressing to continence support.
- Manual handling and safe transfers, including hoists and mobility aids.
- Medication prompting and following a care plan.
- Documentation and clear handover notes.
- Spotting changes in someone's health, mood or appetite.
Hospitality and retail backgrounds count too. Staying calm under pressure, juggling competing needs and making people feel genuinely welcome are exactly the instincts that make a great support worker. This is the foundation of daily living and personal care the people we support rely on every day.
What's different about NDIS work
The biggest shift isn't the tasks. It's the pace and the purpose.
Aged-care rosters can be fast, busy and stretched thin across many residents. NDIS support is usually one-to-one, in someone's own home or out in their community, built around that person's goals rather than a facility's schedule. You're not rushing from room to room. You're helping one person cook a meal, get to TAFE, catch the train with confidence, or simply enjoy an afternoon out.
A few practical differences to expect:
- Goal-focused, not routine-focused. Plans are built around what the person wants to achieve, which is where capacity building and independence comes in.
- Wider age range. You might support a teenager, a young adult or an older participant in the same week.
- More variety. One shift is help at home; the next is community participation support like a social outing.
- A stronger voice for the participant. Choice and control are central, so you're working *with* someone, not simply *for* them.
The qualifications carry over
Good news here. The standard entry qualification, a Certificate III in Individual Support, covers both ageing and disability streams, so much of your training already counts. If you hold a Cert III in Individual Support (Ageing), you're well placed to step into disability support, and we're happy to support people who are still studying.
A quick, honest note: Adom Grace Care is not yet a registered NDIS provider, so the formal NDIS Worker Screening Check isn't the pathway we use. The National Police Check is the key background check we rely on, alongside a Working With Children Check if you'll support under-18s, a current First Aid and CPR certificate, and a driver licence with a reliable car. If you want the full picture, our guide to support worker qualifications and checks walks through every step.
Why people find NDIS work more rewarding
The phrase we hear most often from workers who've switched is *"I finally have time to actually care."* When you're not stretched across a full ward, you get to build real relationships. You see progress. You celebrate the small wins, the first solo bus trip, the meal cooked from scratch, the new friend made at a group.
That's the difference our values of advocacy, gentleness and compassion are built around. Support that feels like genuine companionship rather than a checklist.
Making the move smoothly
If you're ready to switch, a few things help:
- Lean on your transferable skills in your application. Personal care, manual handling and care-plan experience are gold.
- Be clear about your availability and the suburbs you can reach, so we can match you with participants nearby.
- Keep your essentials current, especially your Police Check, First Aid and licence.
- Stay open to learning. NDIS support has its own rhythm, and a willingness to adapt matters more than knowing everything on day one.
You don't have to have it all figured out. We'll help you understand exactly what's needed and point you toward any checks or refreshers you're missing.
