Self-Managed, Plan-Managed or NDIA-Managed?

Serving: Five Dock · Epping · Western Sydney

When your NDIS plan arrives, one of the most important decisions you'll make is also one of the least talked-about: how your funding will be managed. This choice affects how you pay providers, how much paperwork you handle, and how much flexibility you have day to day. It sits at the heart of understanding the NDIS and shapes everything from your first invoice onwards.

Families across Five Dock, Epping and Western Sydney often ask us which option is "best." The honest answer is that there's no single best — there's the option that fits your life. Let's compare the three.

The three ways to manage a plan

There are three main approaches, and you can sometimes use a combination across different parts of your plan:

1. Self-managed — you (or a family member) manage the money directly. 2. Plan-managed — a plan manager handles the money for you. 3. NDIA-managed — the agency pays providers directly.

Let's look at each one.

Self-managed

With self-management, you take the reins. The funding is yours to organise, and you pay your providers directly, keeping records and receipts along the way.

What people love about it:

  • Maximum flexibility — you can choose any provider, not only those who use the NDIS payment systems in a particular way.
  • Full control — you decide who you work with and how supports are arranged, including making the most of your NDIS plan across each budget.
  • A clear picture — you see exactly where every dollar goes.

What to keep in mind:

  • It comes with more responsibility — keeping records, managing invoices, and staying within budget.
  • You'll need to be comfortable with a bit of admin and good organisation.

Self-management suits families who like being hands-on and want the widest choice.

Plan-managed

With plan management, a dedicated plan manager sits between you and the paperwork. They receive invoices from your providers, pay them from your plan, and keep track of your budget.

What people love about it:

  • Less admin — the plan manager handles the invoices and bookkeeping.
  • Good flexibility — you can usually work with a wide range of providers.
  • Helpful oversight — many plan managers give you statements so you can see your spending.

What to keep in mind:

  • You're working with a third party, so it helps to choose a plan manager you trust and communicate well with.
  • The funding for plan management is usually included in the plan, so it doesn't reduce your other supports.

Plan management is a popular middle ground — flexibility without the full admin load.

NDIA-managed

With NDIA management (sometimes called agency-managed), the NDIA pays your providers directly. You don't handle any of the money or invoices yourself.

What people love about it:

  • The simplest option — almost no admin for you.
  • No bookkeeping — the agency handles the payments behind the scenes.

What to keep in mind:

  • You'll generally need to use providers who work within the NDIA's payment system.
  • There's less visibility over the day-to-day flow of funds compared with the other options.

NDIA management suits people who want the least possible paperwork and are happy working within the standard system.

How to choose what's right for you

Ask yourself a few honest questions:

  • How much admin am I comfortable with? Be realistic about your time and energy.
  • How much choice do I want over providers? More flexibility often means more involvement.
  • Do I want to see exactly where the money goes? Self-management gives the clearest view.
  • Is there support around me? A family member or support coordinator can help with whichever option you pick.

There's no wrong answer — only the one that fits your household right now. And it's not set in stone forever; management arrangements can be revisited when you're reviewing or changing your plan.

Mix and match

It's worth knowing that you don't always have to choose just one. Some families self-manage part of their plan while having the rest plan-managed, for example. This lets you keep control where it matters most and hand off the rest.
